For years we have put carbs in the naughty corner, never really understanding the whole truth about carbohydrates.
Let's break it down.
Carbohydrates or carbs are your body's primary energy source and are a crucial part of a well-balanced diet. However, there are carbs and there are carbs.
Complex and Simple
There are two different types of carbs. Complex Carbohydrates are a whole food source such as fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds. And then there are simple carbs. Unlike complex carbs, simple carbs have been through a process to get their name which offers much less nutritional value. White bread, white rice, cookies, chips, candy, sugar, fizzy drinks and juices etc are all known as simple carbs.
Why is this distinction so important?
One of the main differences between simple and complex carbohydrates is that simple carbohydrates have been through a process making them quickly digested and absorbed by the body often contributing to increased blood sugar levels. Complex carbohydrates, however, are in their natural from aka a whole food which takes time to be digested because of their nutrient and high fibre content.
Increasing your daily intake of complex carbohydrates is one of the best ways to support your gut, reduce spiking blood sugar levels, increasing energy and reducing your risk of many life style diseases such as high cholesterol, type 2, heart disease and cancer.
